A $500 Walmart gift card was a key clue in detectives arresting the couple that stole $4.5 billion in Bitcoin earlier this year.

While $500 may seem like an immaterial amount, forensic accounting is not about materiality.

In this instance, the $500 gift card was the clue that tied the IP address of the computer, to a cloud provider, to the couple’s apartment in New York.
